BROWNFIELDS ASSESSMENT COALITION

The East Central Florida Regional Planning Council (ECFRPC) and the partner cities of Apopka, Eustis, Kissimmee, and Longwood won a major Brownfields Coalition Assessment Grant successfully garnered a grant from the U.S. Environmental Planning Agency (USEPA). The $600,000 grant, one of only two Brownfield Cleanup and Assessment grants of this size awarded in the state this round, will be used to identify suspected brownfields within the community.

Through a preliminary study conducted by ECFRPC staff, more than 120 sites have been preliminarily identified as brownfields along the U.S. 441 corridor.

A Brownfields Advisory Committee, made up of local stakeholders, will assist in identifying additional areas and will work as a liaison between the ECFRPC and local communities. The Advisory Committee is paramount to ensuring continued progress in the regional approach towards addressing brownfields spearheaded by the ECFRPC.

This grant award is the first step in the development of a strong regional Brownfields program. Moreover, this grant expands the scope of economic development services provided by the ECFRPC to local governments and organizations within the region.

What are Brownfields?

Brownfields are ‘real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant.'

Brownfields are the result of former common land uses, such as auto repair shops, dry cleaners, gas stations, medical facilities, golf courses, landfills, and factories.

why do brownfields matter?

Cleaning up and reinvesting in these properties protects the environment, reduces blight, and takes development pressures off greenspaces and working lands.
