Trails: The Green Way for Florida
Council Signs Resolution - Trails and Greenways an Economic Boost for Florida
Nature-based tourism is a growing trend and a record-setting year of visitations shows that Florida's trails and greenways are at the forefront of a movement that helps bolster the state's economy. The Florida Greenways and Trails Council has unanimously supported a resolution recognizing the economic impact of Florida's trails and greenways. (Click here to view the complete resolution.)
Trails and the Green Workshop
The Trail and the Green Workshop was a great success with more than 70 attendees from Brevard, Flagler, Lake, Orange, Osceola, Seminole, St, Johns, and Volusia counties. Presentations focused on the economic benefits of trails, how a city can take advantage of trails for redevelopment, the characteristics of a successful trail, and how to leverage funding for trails and economic development projects.

Thank you to our sponsors for all of their help in making this workshop a success!

"The Pinellas Trail is a terrific community asset for Pinellas, Florida's most densly populated county."
"The route runs past Tropicana Field... through parks and both upscale and modest suburban neighborhoods, past a major mall... and on through... Dunedin, where we spent the night."
"Safe and well-maintained with help from a non-profit group, the trail gets plenty of use - about 90,000 people a month."
"The trail has played an economic development role... helping to revitalize downtown Dunedin."

Announcement from METROPLAN ORLANDO
Metroplan Orlando had launched a new web-based, interactive mapping tool for Central Florida's bicyclists allowing you to create a customized map using the streets and paths which best serve your needs.
The mapping system allows you to view several layers of information by turning layers on and off in the Map Contents window. Available layers include: trails (shared use paths), streets with bike lanes and paved shoulders, streets with wide curb lanes, interaction levels (a measure of how much interaction with motor traffic the on-roadway bicyclist can expect), short connector paths, overpasses and underpasses, and neighborhood routes.
After you have selected the information layers you need, you can zoom and pan to your geographic area of interest, measure trip distance, and print a customized map of your creation.
The data for this system has also been updated from the previously available PDF files; the data generally reflects conditions recorded during 2007 & 2008.
(Be sure to check the Help, Legend Explanation and Disclaimer links at the top of the mapping application before contacting Metroplan with questions.)
